About Us

The Origin

Putting an end to waiting and downtime

Labs10 was born in 2019 from a simple observation: it is increasingly difficult to find a block maker and the wait for a hat block often exceeds six months.

Beyond the wait, there was a problem of method. To have a hat block copied, a milliner had to part with it and send it to the block maker to use as a model. The result: impossible to produce with that block for weeks. And since the work was done by hand, the copy was never an exact mirror of the original.

We decided to change that by using digital technology to offer an identical reproduction and perfect repeatability between sizes, without the artisan having to empty their shelves.

Innovation

Everything is made here, in Tergnier

We started with a small 3-axis CNC, but it quickly showed its limits on hollow or complex hat blocks such as Fedoras or overly intricate shapes.

To overcome technical limitations, we spent 3 years searching for solutions and invested a significant sum to install our own 7-axis robot.

The entire process is carried out in-house, in our workshop in Tergnier (Aisne). From 3D scanning to machining, we control every step to ensure the hat block you receive is exactly the one you envisioned.

The Wood Choice

Why not 3D printing?

We considered 3D printing, but plastic is not suited to the demands of the craft. To work with felt or straw, you need steam, heat and the ability to insert blocking pins.

Only wood allows this. We use locally sourced lime wood, machined by the robot but always sanded and varnished by hand. It is this blend of technology and hand finishing that defines the quality of our hat blocks.
